How to Choose a Home EV Charger

Level 1 vs Level 2, how to size amperage to your daily miles and panel capacity, hardwired vs plug-in installs, and which smart features are worth paying for.

Level 1 vs Level 2

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V household outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour — fine if you drive under 30 to 40 miles a day and can charge overnight, every night. Most owners who drive more than that, or who want a meaningful buffer, end up installing Level 2 (240V) charging at home, which typically adds 20 to 40-plus miles of range per hour depending on amperage. Before you buy a charger, match its amperage to two separate limits: what your electrical panel can safely supply, and what your vehicle's onboard charger can actually accept. A 48-amp wall unit is wasted money if your car's onboard charger tops out at 32 amps.

Connector and adapter reality

J1772 is the standard connector for the vast majority of non-Tesla EVs sold in North America. Tesla vehicles have historically used their own connector, though newer models and adapters increasingly support the North American Charging Standard as automakers shift over. Before ordering a home charger, confirm which inlet your vehicle actually has and whether the charger ships with the right connector or requires a separate adapter — this is one of the most common return reasons for home EV chargers.

Hardwired vs NEMA plug-in

Plug-in units — commonly wired to a NEMA 14-50 outlet — are easier to relocate, easier to take with you if you move, and simpler for an electrician to install as a standard outlet circuit. Hardwired units skip the plug entirely, wiring directly into the panel, which can support higher continuous amperage and generally looks cleaner mounted on a garage wall. Neither option is a DIY electrical project unless you are a licensed electrician yourself — panel capacity, breaker sizing, and code compliance for continuous EV loads are not places to guess.

Smart features worth paying for

  • Scheduling — charging automatically during off-peak utility rate windows can meaningfully cut your electricity cost over a year.
  • Power sharing — useful if you have two EVs on one circuit, or if your panel is close to its limit and needs to share capacity intelligently.
  • App monitoring — session history and charge-complete notifications are genuinely convenient day to day.

Large touchscreens, colored ambient lighting, and other cosmetic extras do not affect how well the charger does its actual job — do not let them drive the decision.

Cable length, weather rating, and mounting

Measure the actual distance from your proposed mounting point to where your car parks, including any slack you want for maneuvering — running out of cable length is a common and avoidable frustration. If the charger will live outdoors or in an unheated garage, confirm its weather and temperature rating rather than assuming all units are equally hardened. A wall or post mount that keeps the connector holster off the ground protects the cable from being run over and keeps it out of standing water.
