How to Choose a Dash Cam

Sensor quality vs marketing megapixels, parking mode and hardwire kits, dual-channel setups, and the SD-card and heat issues that kill cheap cameras.

What matters more than marketing megapixels

  • Sensor and bitrate — a camera's real-world night footage depends far more on sensor size and bitrate than the resolution number printed on the box. A clean, readable 1440p clip beats a noisy, blocky 4K clip every time you actually need it.
  • Dual channel — a front-and-rear setup captures more of the incidents that actually end up mattering, from rear-end collisions to parking lot scrapes. Rideshare and delivery drivers should also look at cabin-facing channels for passenger disputes.
  • Parking mode — this needs a proper hardwire power kit, not just the cigarette-lighter plug. A dash cam that only runs off the plug sleeps the moment you shut the car off, which is exactly when a hit-and-run or break-in is most likely to happen.
  • Mount and wire routing — cameras that route power through the A-pillar and headliner keep the cabin tidy and out of your sightline, and look far less likely to be tampered with than a cord draped across the dash.

Card and heat management

Standard microSD cards are not built for constant write cycles and were never designed to sit in a hot windshield environment; use a high-endurance card rated specifically for dash cam or surveillance use, and format it in the camera itself rather than on a computer. Heat is the other silent killer — cheap lithium batteries swell or fail in a parked car baking in summer sun. Look for cameras that use capacitors instead of batteries, or ones explicitly rated for high-temperature operation, if you park outside in a hot climate.

Resolution and field of view tradeoffs

A wider field of view captures more of the scene but can make license plates and small details harder to read at a distance, since more pixels are spent on the edges of the frame. A narrower, more zoomed field of view does the opposite. Most drivers are best served by a moderate field of view — roughly 130 to 160 degrees — paired with a strong night-time sensor, rather than chasing the widest angle or highest headline resolution available.

GPS, Wi-Fi, and app features

Built-in GPS timestamps your location and speed on the footage, which is genuinely useful if you ever need to back up an insurance claim. Wi-Fi app transfer is convenient for pulling clips without removing the card. Cloud connectivity and live-view features are nice extras but should not be the deciding factor — a dash cam's entire job is producing usable footage when something goes wrong, and every other feature is secondary to that.

Privacy and local rules

Recording audio and where you can mount a camera both vary by state and country — check your local rules before you assume a feature is fine to use everywhere you drive. Point the lens at the road ahead, or the traffic behind you, not at neighboring vehicles' occupants or into other people's private property, unless you have a specific reason and, where required, consent.
