Safety first, bargains second

Brakes are the one category on this site where we will not push you toward the cheapest listing just because it exists. Stopping distance and pedal feel are not places to gamble on an unbranded kit with vague application coverage. Look for compounds and brands with a track record, application charts that explicitly list your year, make, and model, and hardware kits that match your specific caliper design — not a generic "fits most vehicles" claim. Measure rotor diameter and check option packages before you order; a "great deal" on the wrong caliper kit is just a return shipping label.

Pads: quiet, clean, or aggressive

Ceramic pad compounds are the default choice for most daily-driven cars — they run quieter, produce lighter brake dust, and are gentle on rotors. Semi-metallic compounds bite harder and shed heat better under sustained hard braking, but they can be noisier and dustier, and they wear rotors a bit faster. If you tow, carry heavy loads regularly, or drive mountain grades often, look at pads rated for that duty rather than a standard commuter compound — the heat capacity difference is real, not marketing. Buy for the driving you actually do, not the driving you imagine you might do. Track pads on a school-run hatch are a common wrong buy; quiet ceramics on a tow truck heading into the mountains are the opposite mistake.

Rotors: resurface, replace, or reuse

If your rotors are below the minimum thickness stamped on the hub, warped enough to pulse the pedal, or heavily grooved, replace them along with the pads — pairing fresh pads with worn-out rotors wastes half the job and can transfer that wear pattern into the new pads early. If the rotors are within spec and show only light, even wear, reusing them with new pads is a reasonable way to save money. Coated rotors resist surface rust longer than bare cast iron, which matters more in salt-belt winters and for vehicles that sit between drives — a small premium that is usually worth paying for trucks and daily winter drivers. Drill-and-slot patterns look aggressive but do not replace correct thickness and compound choice for street use.

Hardware and calipers

  • Replace clips, shims, and anti-rattle hardware when you replace pads — reusing corroded hardware is a common source of squeal.
  • Inspect caliper slide pins and boots while everything is apart; a sticking caliper wears one pad faster than the other and can drag under normal driving.
  • If a caliper is leaking or seized, budget for a replacement or rebuild rather than putting new pads on a compromised caliper.
  • Check brake fluid condition during the same job — old fluid boils earlier under heat and can feel like pad fade.

Never trust a guide that says a pad-and-rotor job takes "only 20 minutes"; plan for seized hardware, torque checks, and a careful bed-in drive.

Wrong-buy checklist

  • A grinding metal-on-metal sound under braking — pads are fully worn; do not "drive it a bit longer."
  • Ordering by year and model only when your car has a performance brake package.
  • Buying track compounds for a winter daily and then complaining about squeal every morning.
  • Replacing pads only when rotors are below minimum thickness or heavily pulsed.
  • Mixing random pad and rotor brands without checking compound compatibility notes.
  • Skipping hardware clips because the old ones "still look fine" under salt corrosion.

Signs you should not wait

  • A pedal that feels soft, sinks lower than usual, or needs pumping to feel firm.
  • Pulsing or vibration through the pedal or steering wheel under braking.
  • The car pulling noticeably to one side when you brake.
  • Visible lip on the rotor edge or pads worn to the wear indicator.

Bedding-in without the folklore

Follow the pad manufacturer's bed-in steps when they publish them. In general you want a series of moderate-to-firm stops from speed, with cooling time between pulls, so pad material transfers evenly onto the rotor face. Hard panic stops from cold on brand-new pads can glaze surfaces and create the judder you were trying to fix. After the first heat cycle, recheck lug torque if the instructions call for it, and expect a short break-in period of dust and light odor — that is material transfer, not an instant defect.

If noise appears after a week of gentle commuting, inspect hardware seating and pad contact before assuming the compound is "bad." Many quiet pads need a proper bed-in before they earn their reputation. If the pedal pulses and you skipped rotor replacement on thin or lipped discs, fix the rotors — pads alone will not erase a mechanical runout problem.
